History: Jules @ Psych Wikia
Personality:When Junior Detective Juliet O'Hara is first introduced, she's just transferred from her hometown Miami to Santa Barbara to replace Head Detective Carlton Lassiter's old partner. It's instantly obvious that Juliet is the polar opposite of the surly, brusque Lassiter. She's sociable and talkative, eager to please and impress, unfailingly optimistic and always ready to aid and cheer everybody up, whether they like it or not. Her sunny disposition falters only when her frustration over the lack of respect displayed by her fellow officers – especially her partner – gets to her.
Though Juliet is extremely smart and ambitious, her young age makes it hard for people to take her seriously as a cop and her superiors to delegate more responsibilities to her, at first. She also has to learn the hard way how too much eagerness and friendliness can be taken the wrong way in her chosen work environment after a well-meant attempt to befriend one of the few female officers at the station ends up in a harassment charge. But as the months go by, Juliet gains more self-confidence and gets more familiar with the way things are done. She begins to assert herself more determinedly around the workplace, especially with Lassiter, although never in a disrespectful manner. During her years in Santa Barbara, she slowly sheds some of her youthful naivety and the sharpest edge of her spirited behavior as she settles into her role at the police department, perhaps even hardening a little by some of the harsher realities of her job that have forced her to realize both her own mortality and those of the people she has come to love. She no longer needs to prove to anyone that just because she's a tiny, cute blonde doesn't mean that she isn't a competent professional as well.
She may seem like the proper all-American sweetheart at first glance, but Juliet's obviously had a very interesting youth that's a veritable wealth of stories. There are many instances throughout the series when she divulges some random, colorful piece of information about her past that tends to raise eyebrows, referring to an adventurous side that's usually reigned in. Growing up with older brothers only, she probably had to learn early on to hold her own and defend what is hers, by force if necessary. In 'American Duos' she reveals she got kicked out of cheer camp for smacking another girl on the head after she stole Juliet's nail polish, whereas during her undercover op as a roller derby contestant in 'Talk Derby To Me' she dislocated another girl's nose by elbowing her in the face for "curling into her wingspan". It's okay, though, they made friends afterward; another example of Juliet's excellent people skills. She also has a reserve of childish enthusiasm to her, which is likely why she gets along so well with Shawn and Gus right from the get-go. She has a habit of fully and completely immersing herself into whatever project she undertakes, be it going undercover to catch a criminal or throwing a surprise party to a co-worker. She tends to get involved a bit too deep while undercover, however, tending to unintentionally turn a deaf ear to the advice of others when so focused on what she's trying to accomplish.
Despite her relatively young age, Juliet is an excellent cop. She's very intuitive and good at deductive reasoning. It's revealed that she scored an impressive 98.4 out of 100 in the detective's exam, thus beating Lassiter's standing record of 97.2. She's also an excellent marksman. Though generally flexible and easygoing, she's no pushover, especially when it comes to work. She holds her own firmly when she believes in the rightness of what she's doing, having full faith in her own abilities. But she also owns up to her mistakes if she makes them. Her competitive streak doesn't like being wrong, but she will swallow her pride when needed, admit culpability, and then work hard to resolve any errors or inequalities. She'll burn the midnight oil if that's what she must do to get the culprit. In 'Bounty Hunters!', she agonizes over slipping and allowing a criminal to escape, blaming herself worse than anyone else could. It shows not only her strong dedication to justice, but also a sense of personal reliability – she wants to be worth the trust that's placed upon her 100%, and failing that trust hit her hard and left her nearly inconsolable.
There are two sides to Juliet. She's a cheery, optimistic girly girl who loves the color pink, animals, sappy movies and department store sales. And she's a kickass detective who will take you down, figuratively or literally, if you mess with her. There is some overlap with the two at times; though Juliet strives to display the appropriate gravitas required of a detective from the get-go, she can't always suppress her innate good humor and some of her more feminine inclinations. Cute shoes are cute shoes, whether or not she's on duty. She easily returns Lassiter's snippy comments with blithe comebacks or "cornpone country-bumpkin sayings", rarely taking offense at his moods. She has a habit of protecting other people's feelings, playing along gamely even at the expense of her own feelings or reputation so they won't lose face – she does this especially with Lassiter. On the flipside, she's not shy of using sarcasm or biting retorts if need be, having no problem putting people in their place. She can definitely take on a no-nonsense attitude as easily as she can flash a smile, knowing very well when to be serious and when to lighten up. If she's not intimidated by Lassiter, she's not intimidated by much anybody.
Despite being so vastly different, Juliet and Lassiter have managed to forge a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. Juliet's more sensitive attitude is a good counterpart to Lassiter's often abrasive manner and direct approach; she reminds him of the importance of compassion and discretion while he teaches her the necessity of cutting corners and playing hard sometimes. He may exasperate her on a regular basis, but Juliet knows she couldn't ask for a better partner and mentor than Lassiter. Juliet tends to act as the self-appointed peacekeeper between her partner and the psychic consultant Shawn Spencer, who goes out of his way to torment Lassiter at every turn. Juliet considers Shawn to be vastly more amusing and useful than Lassiter gives him credit for, being more open to the possibility that sometimes standard police procedures aren't the only things that can advance an investigation. She's one of the first people to give Shawn's psychic claims credence, having faith in his "divinations" and often urging others to heed them, too. Despite his oddities and at times downright juvenile behavior, Juliet trusts his intuition. On a more personal note, she also can't deny that Shawn is interesting and handsome, the attraction between the pair obvious.
Growing up with an absent, conman father who always promised her everything but delivered very little have Jules placing a high premium on honesty and integrity, and she's slow to forgive anyone who breaks her trust in them. But even stronger still is Juliet's moral compass and her belief in what's right and what's wrong. She has sworn to uphold the law, and she'll honor that duty even when it conflicts with her loyalty to people; when Juliet is faced with the reality of having to arrest her own brother Ewan, who has been her mentor and inspiration from an early age, she doesn't question what she has to do even when having to do it visibly pains her.
For all her outward candidness, Juliet guards her innermost feelings carefully. She doesn't like to show weakness, preferring to retreat from overwhelming situations to deal with them in private. Sometimes she can also live in denial if it suits her purposes. The episode 'Romeo and Juliet and Juliet' finds her temporarily reassigned to the most boring desk job ever at the city hall after a kidnapping incident weeks prior, and she refuses to return to the force under the excuse of taking some time to heal from a trauma.
Then there are her feelings for Shawn. In 'Woman Seeking Dead Husband-Smokers Okay, No Pets', Juliet questions Lassiter about the affair rumors involving his previous partner, stating that she is uncomfortable with interoffice romances; a baseline reason as to why it takes her three years to even admit a romantic interest in Shawn and to ask him out despite the clear chemistry between them since their first meeting. Possibly using Lassiter's relationship with his old partner as an example, she's hesitant to risk ruining a friendship/work relationship for a romantic one that may or may not work out. Shawn is clearly not the kind of guy Juliet wants to have romantic feelings for, but at the same time can't help it – still, she's determined to try. Though undeniably attracted to Shawn, she strives to keep him at arm's length out of worries concerning his seeming inability to grow up and commit to anything. In fact, earlier that year she goes on a few dates with an older man with the qualities she thinks she wants; mature, distinguished, calm and steady. The opposite of Shawn, basically. When she finally gathers the courage to take a chance on Shawn, Shawn is already on a date with his high school crush Abigail. Though it's visibly upsetting for him, Shawn has to reject Juliet, unable to dump Abigail again; he owes her this date, the chance to see if there's any future for them. Heartbroken but understanding, Juliet figuratively takes a step back when Shawn eventually starts to date Abigail, despite the heartbreak it's causing her. Selfishness isn't in her; she firmly believes that if Shawn is happy, that's enough for her, even if it doesn't keep her from being miserable or feeling a sting of jealousy every now and then.
Powers/Abilities: Aside from her rift power, Jules is a normal human woman with no remarkable special abilities.
Appearance: Juliet is fairly slim and petite, standing only up to 5'6". She has blue eyes and long blonde hair that has a slight, natural curl to it. More often than not, there’s a smile on her lips, reflecting her cheerful nature. Her emotions and general state of mind are easily read on her face, her expressions tending to speak clearer than words; she has about ten distinct ways of pursing her lips or furrowing her brow that each mean different things. Her hair is usually pulled back into a bun or a ponytail while working, otherwise she tends to leave it down. Wardrobe-wise, her style is neat but feminine. She likes bright colors, often pairing up her professional, grey or black pant suits or skirts with a blouse in some primary color. When off-duty, her style is more casual and relaxed, usually jeans and a nice shirt/sweater ensemble.

How has your character changed from their canon self?
Juliet got dropped into Alt!Chicago from a bad place, canonically, just a couple of days after getting kidnapped by a serial killer and nearly dropped to her death from a clock tower. Facing her own mortality in such jarring manner impacts her deeply. Juliet's sense of personal security is shaken, and so is her professional confidence. The shock of the event eventually fades, but the feeling of helplessness lingers. She’s scared, plain and simple. She begins to doubt herself, whether she's cut out to be a detective after all, whether she can handle another case like this. What if it happens again? What if next time, help doesn't arrive in time? What if the tables are turned and next time, she’s responsible for getting to someone in time, only to fail? A scared cop is a liability to herself and those she’s sworn to protect, and Jules isn't about to risk it.
Gnawed by all these doubts, Jules refuses to entertain the thought of joining the police force formed by the fellow abductees sucked into Chicago by the rift. It isn't until some months after ending up in Chicago that she reconsiders, when Mr. Yang of all people ends up in the city. Aided by all the previous, encouraging (each to their own degree) conversations she'd had with Shawn, Lassiter and the friends she'd made since her arrival, Jules finally realizes she’s letting her own fear control her, and that being afraid sometimes doesn't make her any less good at her job – and most importantly, that by joining the force she'll have better chances at keeping her friends and loved ones safe. Decision made, she joins the force and settles into the role of a detective with comfortable familiarity, and also begins teaching self-defense lessons with Buffy Summers. The entire experience and eventually overcoming it makes her a stronger person, and in some ways also a better detective – she’s gone through something of a rite of passage by fire – but it also hardens her a little bit, making her just a little less preppy and openly enthusiastic.
Juliet ends up discovering her Rift power, the ability to feel the emotions of others as if they were her own, the hard way. At first she confuses them with her own private feelings, making her question her emotional stability, but mostly dismissing it as part of the trauma she suffered back home. Eventually she begins to put the pieces together and realizes she's actually feeling the emotions of others, which sometimes compound the intensity of her own – not helpful when she's stuck in an argument with Lassiter, for instance. She's always been sympathetic and compassionate as a person, and thought them to be an important part of who she is, but actually feeling the exact thing the person next to her is going through is, especially in the beginning, exhausting and unnerving. Especially when it comes to strong surges of pure emotion such as fear. In other cases, having empathy as Rift power can just be plain awkward. Teleios muting this ability will likely be a relief at first, but as time goes by she may in fact find herself missing it. If for no other reason, because it reminds her of Chicago.
During the little over a year Jules spends in Chicago, she and Shawn continue to dance around their romantic feelings for one another. Without getting caught up solving murders and other cases, they end up spending more time together as just friends and deepening their relationship further. Influenced by that as well as the city's unpredictability – its tendency to take people away as abruptly as it makes them arrive – Juliet ends up being overwhelmed by emotion after Shawn and Gus find Lassiter (who had been missing for a few weeks) and on the spur of the moment, kisses Shawn. The kiss leaves both flabbergasted and confused by the shift in their status quo, and they mostly avoid each other awkwardly for a few weeks. Finally, Jules once again gathers her courage and approaches Shawn at a prom dance they're both attending, and they manage to long at last clear the air and agree to give dating each other an actual chance. Much to Lassiter's eternal disgust and chagrin.
Some weeks later, when the news arrives that the Rift activity in Chicago has become so unstable and out of control that the entire universe is about to collapse in on itself, Juliet is conflicted. Santa Barbara is home, but Chicago has become one too in the year she's spent there; she's made more close friends in that time than she did back in Santa Barbara, she and Shawn have finally come clean about their feelings for one another, and she feels fulfilled at her job, as an active, contributing member of the Wanderer society. She doesn't want to say goodbye to the people she's come to know and love, doesn't even want to leave the city despite it's dangers. Considering going back home was on the top of her wishlist when she initially ended up in Chicago, it's a big change in her priorities.
Chicago already gave Jules a crash course in alternate universes, so upon arriving into Teleios, she isn't going to be quite as freaked out as she might have been without the previous experience. It will, however, dishearten her to find out she's the only one from the Santa Barbara foursome in Teleios – no Lassiter, no Gus, and especially, no Shawn. It will be another stab in the heart to meet all these people she knew and was friends with in Chicago who'll have no recollection of her in Teleios. She'll not be sure if she buys into the whole debt and Utopia thing, but until some way to return home (since Chicago is now gone) presents itself, she'll play along and work on carving a place for herself in this new reality she finds herself in.
Are they gaining any abilities from their time in game? Did the game setting take something from them?
As falling through the rift in BTR grants everybody some new ability, Jules will have her Rift ability upon arriving to Teleios. Juliet's compassionate side got amplified by the rift to a point where she actually became an empath, being able to sense the emotions of others around her and in time and with practice, manipulate them to a degree.
